The Japanese printmaking technique known as Mokuhanga uses watercolour brushed onto wooden blocks that are printed on to on highly absorbent paper sucking the pigment deep into the fibrous tissue. .

This contrasts with the woodcut prints that emerged in Europe that utilised oily inks rolled on to the block on less absorbent paper, so the ink sits on the surface.

The Mokuhanga technique brings together my love of using raw pigments to express vibrant colours with the precision and clarity of cutting a wood block.

My approach to this technique is a fusion of Eastern and Western approaches that uses the endless colour combinations possible with Muckuhanga with the clarity and sharpness of rolled on ink.
