Recently a young walrus that appeared in Shetland an arctic wanderer displaced from her tribe by events we can only but imagine. Some ecologists consider the walrus a ‘keystone’ species – using the metaphor of the key stone in a built arch that holds the other stones in place. Take away the key stone and everything else collapses because everything is connected to everything else. I spent a morning in the company of this creature of this arctic teacher, who like the unfolding ripples in water bathed in rain taught me that everything is connected to everything else.
