Oystercatchers are amongst the first birds to arrive back in Shetland after winter slumber . Known locally in Shetland as ‘shalders’ they have a propensity to nest on the side of roads where there is perfect sized gravel. Unfortunately mortality is very high around these road side nests , but here the birds that bring the promise spring fly out into the world from the new light that has returned to to the land.
