Winter 2023 saw lots of dead , or emaciated puffins washed up along shorelines around Shetland Orkney and Northeast Scotland. exact numbers are unknown but its been described as the worst mass dying of puffins known so far. The emaciated condition of the birds suggested that they had been unable to find food out at sea where they should be at this time of the year. During that autumn 1000s of guillemots and razorbills were washed up along the east coast of Scotland in a similar emaciated condition. Some species of sea birds are starving to death because something is going horribly wrong with our ocean’s – the dead puffins that are washing up on beaches all over Shetland are a horrific reminder of that fact. Starvation as a word lacks its true meaning when we have a full stomach. The starving birds are warning us that something is wrong in our oceans , that something is out of kilter .
We ignore these starving birds at our own peril at our own peril because if we poison or deplete the waters we are also poisoning and depleting ourselves.
