It was the trout that taught me the power of the circle.
On calm evenings the trout kiss the surface of the water sending out ripples of concentric circles that form interconnected patterns across the loch like a delicate Celtic Interlace. The kiss is actually the trout taking emerging midge pupae that are suspended in the tension of the surface film of the water where they get momentarily stuck before they beak free into the air. These concentric circles from the rising trout became a dominant theme in my art where they mostly symbolise the ecological truth that ‘everything is connected to everything else’.
The circular ripples of rising fish changed not just my approach to visual composition , but over time changed my way of relating to the world in terms of embracing the conceptual outworkings of the circle. This shift towards circular compositions echoed the inner change in me that was moving into a cyclical way of thinking about the world that was more in tune with the rhythms and flows of the seasons, the sun , the moon and the tides.
