This painting has had an extremely slow evolution over about 15 years.
It started life as an almost paradisal image of a multicoloured tree of life growing next a golden river of light. The leaves are for the healing of the nations. However, this painting didn’t somehow read true, and I hid it away in a dark corner bringing it out to look at occasionally.
Recently I decided to completely paint over it with a different tree of life inspired by the few miniature relic trees that are clinging on for life on various cliff faces in Shetland where they have been saved from the ravages of humans and over grazing. These trees are true survivors, full of elemental energy that will some bloom forth again. This tree sits amongst the powerful red granite rock, millions of years old, survivor and witness of more events than we could possibly imagine. The water flows pure and strong here, clean and free of pollution. The fish that we have almost wiped out are starting to return to the freshness of its life.
