One hundred and seventy years later as Shetland is on the verge of entering into an age of mass industrialization of the land it is obvious that no lessons from the past have been learned. As I write the Weisdale valley is once again on the verge of becoming ‘The Shadowed Valley’ as the land is Viking Energy wind farm and its associated infrastructure. The spirit that drove the ruthless laird David Dakers Black to cast this valley into shadow is alive and well today resurfacing in a different and even more destructive form.
As I write this, I know of people who are suffering severely because of the windfarm in terms of ultrasonic vibrations destabilizing their nervous systems. The burn of Lunklet on the west side of Shetland has been turned into a habitat that is now deemed to be uninhabitable for the survival of Trout. Blasting a quarry into the hillside for windfarm construction led to a sudden discharge of acidic metal-bearing leachates sending the water into a state of ‘acidic shock’ that has severely compromised the freshwater ecosystem. Trout have lived in these waters relatively undisturbed since the ice age and in a matter of months they have been displaced.

A warning of what happens when profit comes before people.
