THE BIRDS OUR TEACHERS – PAINTINGS
The birds in my paintings are storytellers. Keepers of wisdom in our post truth age.
I have always been close to the birds but for a short while I drifted away from them and got lost as a person as a result. The birds started to call to me though my drawings when one day at the end of my charcoal a man appeared who was trying to touch a bird that was out of reach.
I realised my heart was crying and led by the haunting call of the curlew I headed north to Shetland where the birds became my teachers. Feeling disillusioned by the values of the art world with its lust for money shock and awe, and feeling disenchanted with the vacuous intellectual snobbery that had crept into academia I followed a different path into hills, lochs and moors far away from the worlds of men. The birds become my teachers showing me different ways to live and different way to paint.
